I owe my love of cooking and desire to make people happy through eating and drinking entirely to my Sicilian family. I learned to cook and care for others by watching my great aunts and uncles tend small backyard gardens, sitting with them at the kitchen table while they prepared handmade feasts for enormous family lunches and holidays. After 14 years working my way up through nearly every aspect of the food business – starting in restaurant kitchens, catering companies, pie maker, personal chef to actors and directors and a stint at Formaggio Kitchen-South End – I started Uncommon Feasts in 2014.
With each event, I work to achieve that familiar feeling of the comfort, pleasure, and ease of a family meal, while presenting the food with care and elegance, and incorporating the client’s unique perspective. We are immeasurably fortunate to benefit from New England’s abundance of organically-grown produce, and meat and fish from responsibly-raised and sourced animals. Over the years I have developed trusted relationships and lasting friendships with farmers and purveyors whom I rely on for my ingredients. Preparing any given meal may mean multiple trips to Boston-area farmers’ markets, road trips up to Maine or meeting a farmer halfway, in a parking lot by the side of the highway. We also rely on the rich community of local artisans – wood-crafters, potters, spice importers – for all of the touches – the seasonings, the plating, the aromas that fill the room – that shape each unique culinary event. We seek out beverage pairings from small importers who work exclusively with natural wines, and from local craft brewers. We manage each event as a complete service, inviting our clients to be as involved creating the event as they would like, but handling every detail from placing each napkin, to shucking every oyster, to refilling every glass, to drying each plate and fork after the meal.
I first got a taste for wine as an inquisitive customer at the Wine Bottega in Boston’s North End and was captivated as much by the passion and intellectual curiosity of the people pouring the wine as the beverage itself. I began to devour any and all opportunities to taste and converse about wine; to seek out others who were similarly driven; to investigate other connected disciplines – like farming, food production, the science of brewing beer, the biology of microorganisms, importing – to the point where I realized I wanted to be one of the folks teaching, rather than just tasting. Finally, I quietly walked away from a career in the corporate legal world in order to fill my life with the history, geography, culture, science, poetry of food, wine, and beer.
The more deeply I have delved into studying wine and wine making, I have come to understand that the distinction between “natural” and “made” wines is so fundamental that it is difficult to categorize the two even as the same species of creature. I am driven – as many in the wine world are coming to be – by the belief that wine should be natural: from grapes farmed without chemicals, in harmony with all the other surrounding living growing things; from juices allowed to ferment with as little intervention as possible; produced with the intention of telling the story of the geography, the rain and the sun of the season, and the hunches and personality of the winemaker; and not something engineered to satisfy the expectations of mass markets. These simple, basic principles hold just as true for growing food and brewing beer, and through

Brendan Ward, the founder of Ward Estate & Family Law, began his career after receiving his Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire searching for a job that would both fulfill him personally and support him financially – the two don’t always go hand-in-hand. Like all great journeys, there were many routes along the way.
Brendan’s first job out of college was a customer support specialist in the business to business department at a wireless communications company. It was here that Brendan was able to begin to learn the fundamentals of customer service developing a lifelong commitment to providing every customer with exceptional service. However, the life of a customer service specialist would not prove to be last stop of the journey.
Brendan soon found himself as an intern for a high tech public relations firm. Here Brendan was able to learn about digital media, marketing and once again excellent customer service. Every step of his journey has given Brendan the tools he needs to be a successful advocate and counselor for his clients. His work at the PR firm was a great learning experience but Brendan still longed for more: he wanted a career where he would help people in a more intimate and hands-on manner.
Brendan changed his path forever when he made the choice of volunteering on a political campaign. Brendan was hooked and quickly became a political junky and even a paid campaign staffer for several local and state-wide political campaigns. Through his paid and volunteer work on political campaigns Brendan began to see the benefits of a legal education. Brendan had found the opportunity to help make the world a better place and at the same time make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Brendan soon found himself working for a politician in her legal office. He got a job as a paralegal at a firm that focused on family law and estate administration. It was during this experience that Brendan knew he wanted to be a lawyer.
Brendan enrolled in the New England School of Law in downtown Boston, going to law school in the evenings and working full-time as a paralegal at an office focusing on family law and estate administration. As he continued working his way through law school he began to see that the way most attorneys practiced law and ran their businesses was not the way he wanted to live. Prior to graduating law school and passing the bar – Brendan decided that being an attorney and doing things the way the always been done wouldn’t work for him. Brendan decided to take his journey in a different direction.
Swearing off practicing law and instead focusing on providing service to others, Brendan began a career in Human Resources at a Boston area non-profit. Here he learned that customer service was the most important part of being an effective Human Resources Professional. At this point Brendan began to see a pattern – every job he had shared one major element. The element of making sure that the customer is satisfied and receiving excellent service. Brendan continued his career in Human Resources for five years at both the local non-profit and a large corporate real estate firm.
In January of 2011 Brendan joined a law firm and began practicing with the law firm of Mavros & Fitzgerald, where he focused on Family Law. At Mavros & Fitzgerald Brendan began to become a Personal Family Lawyer through the Family Wealth Planning Institute, a private organization focused on providing excellent estate planning services to clients. Brendan received extensive training and coaching in the process of receiving this designation.
In August of 2013 Brendan founded his own firm Ward Estate & Family Law where he could do things the way he wanted to be able to serve families with young children in a new and innovative way. Brendan’s practice gives families the guidance, warmth and knowledge they need to make informed estate planning decisions for their families. With Brendan’s guidance families can know that they have taken the appropriate steps to care for their loved ones if anything were to happen.
When not helping families with planning for the future Brendan and his Partner Andrew spend time renovating their 1930’s bungalow in Nahant, MA. Brendan and Andrew also are the proud parents of a mini-goldendoodle named Muriel. Brendan aside from his parental duties to Muriel spends a great deal of time volunteering in his local community. Brendan is the past president of the Copley Society of Art Circle, a member of the town of Nahant Advisory & Finance Committee and the Secretary of local non-profit 01908.
